Forty years of Highfield Park

The area we know today as Highfield Park was originally a place of green fields and rocky granite outcrops and it was ‘out in the country’. There were very few people living there. Mostly situated in the townland of Rahoon (Rath Ún or Ún’s Fort), it was bordered by two of the main roads into Galway, the Taylor’s Hill road and the Rahoon road. There was a small granite quarry there, (near the grounds of St Helen’s) and a couple of stone turrets which probably served as watchtowers.

Sinn Féin hold rally at intervention of IMF and EU

The Mayo branch of Sinn Féin held a protest at the intervention of the IMF and EU into Ireland’s finances on Tuesday evening. The sparsely attended protest, held in Market Square, Castlebar, was addressed by both Mayo county councillor Gerry Murray and Castlebar town councillor Therese Ruane.

Legal issues currently being discussed before grit made available to public

Following a presentation from Mr Iarla Moran on Mayo County Council’s winter maintenance plan at this week’s Swinford Electoral Area meeting, a number of councillors called for grit to be deposited in strategic locations for local groups to use to grit local roads.

An invitation will be extended to Queen Elizabeth to visit the Mayo Peace Park, if a proposed state visit to Ireland materialises in the next few years.
